Small Group Tutoring

At Cherrybrook Maths Coaching, our small group tutoring is designed to provide personalised and highly effective support for students in a collaborative yet focused environment. Here’s what sets our small group sessions apart:

1. Group Size

Each class is kept to a maximum of 5 students, ensuring that every learner receives ample individual attention. Our tutors take the time to understand each student’s unique learning style, habits, progress at school, and areas for improvement. By tailoring strategies to each student’s needs, we create an environment where optimal learning can take place, helping every student grow in confidence and capability.

2. Curriculum Options

We offer two distinct group types:

School-Specific Groups

These groups follow the curriculum of the students’ individual schools. We teach content one step ahead of the school schedule, so students first learn with us and then reinforce their understanding when they encounter the topic again in class. This approach allows students to feel confident, prepared, and less stressed during lessons at school, as they are revisiting familiar concepts.

Mixed Groups

In mixed groups, we use our own CMC Curriculum, carefully designed and sequenced to align with the syllabi of most schools. While it’s possible that the school topics may not perfectly align with our sequence, this works to the advantage of our students:

  • If a topic is covered at school first: We focus on revision and getting the student exam-ready.
  • If a topic is covered with us first: Students will be well-prepared and confident when they encounter it at school.

No matter the setting, students will receive weekly homework to reinforce what they’ve learned. As a guideline, we recommend 90 minutes of homework per week for Years 7–9, and approximately 2 hours per week for Years 10–12 to ensure they consolidate their understanding effectively.

3. Multiple Learning Modes

We utilise a variety of teaching techniques to cater to different learning preferences and make math engaging:

  • Direct Instruction: Tutors introduce new concepts, providing step-by-step guidance on solving problems.
  • Demonstrations on Whiteboards: Students love working on our large whiteboards! This promotes discussion, allows students to easily erase and retry solutions, and fosters an environment where they can share their mathematical thinking confidently.
  • Working and Presentation Skills: We emphasise the importance of showing work clearly to communicate reasoning and earn full marks in exams.
  • Review Questions: Every session begins with a review to consolidate previous learning.
  • Homework Assistance: Students are welcome to bring school questions they’re struggling with, and we’ll dedicate time to help them during the session.

These varied modes of instruction keep sessions dynamic, engaging, and highly effective in building both skills and confidence.

4. Frequency of Lessons

We recommend one-hour lessons per week as the standard. For students who need additional support (as determined during our initial assessment), we encourage attending two hours per week to provide the extra guidance necessary for success.

Our small group tutoring combines the best of personalised attention, engaging learning methods, and rigorous curriculum alignment to ensure every student excels in math while building confidence that lasts a lifetime. Whether in school-specific or mixed groups, students will feel prepared, supported, and empowered to achieve their best.
